Law studies at the University of Cologne. 1979 – 1983 scientific assistant at the Institute for Banking Law at the University of Cologne. Admitted to the bar in 1982. PhD 1983 on a banking law subject.

From 1982 Attorney at Boden, Oppenhoff & Schneider, later Oppenhoff & Rädler in Cologne, since 1988 as an Equity Partner. 1986 working for the US law firms Thompson & Knight (Dallas, Texas) and Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering (Washington D.C.); 2001-2019 Equity Partner of the international commercial law firm BEITEN BURKHARDT at the offices in Düsseldorf, Cologne and since 2007 in Frankfurt.
1997 – 2001 Board Member of the Chamber of Lawyers Cologne.
Since February 2019, Dr. Joachim Wessel has been acting as Off Counsel for BLUEDEX, and advises national and international clients primarily in competition law matters.


Dr. Joachim Wessel advises and represents large corporations and medium-sized enterprises in the area of unfair competition law and advertising, and is the contact person for issues regarding media and culture. He is extensively experienced in industrial property litigation regarding non-technical proprietary rights.

He supports enterprises, especially from the areas of consumer electronics, household goods and consumer products, in their designing and implementing advertising campaigns in all available media, and in their defence in litigation cases. This equally applies to advice in competition law matters regarding e-commerce concepts and their implementation for the online sale of products in the mail-order business in addition to the traditional retail sales, and in establishing the relevant distribution networks.
